Fall 2008 Intern Positions

INTERN PROGRAM MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Applicants for intern Program positions must meet the following requirements in order to qualify for the program: 1) At the time an application is completed and submitted, the applicant must be a full-time student and must currently be enrolled at a college, university, or vocational-technical school. 2) By the time the internship is to start, applicants must have completed their entire freshman year at their college or university (be classified as a sophomore) or have completed not less than one year of study at their vocational-technical school. Some positions have additional requirements that are above and beyond the program’s minimum requirements.

INITIAL APPLICATION DEADLINE: Friday, August 1, 2008. Applications received after the initial application deadline will be considered if the position has not been filled.

APPLICATIONS: The State of South Dakota Intern Application is available at most South Dakota Career Centers, South Dakota college and university career and placement offices, and at the South Dakota Bureau of Personnel. POSITION TITLE:                        Television Production Assistant Intern- FILLED

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Intern will assist the South Dakota Public Broadcasting Television Department with on-location shooting, including helping haul equipment, assisting videographers and producers with camera, audio, and light setup. Intern will assist with postproduction of television programs and interstitial elements. Work would include editing, graphic production, and logging of videotapes. Intern will assist in the production of live programming including operating studio equipment such as cameras, lights, and audio equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must be a full time student at a college or university and have sophomore standing or above by the end of the Spring 2008 semester, or must currently be enrolled at a vocational-technical school and have completed one year (nine months) by the start of the internship. Preference will be given to applicants pursuing a degree in mass communications, journalism, and/or media studies. Applicants must have good communication skills. They should also be able to work flexible hours and may be required to travel for several days at a time. Applicant must be able to lift up to fifty pounds.

 INTERN PROGRAM – FALL 2008

 

POSITION TITLE:                      Corrections Analyst Intern (Cancelled)

POSITION DESCRIPTION: This intern will be assigned to the Interstate Compact Office.  This intern position will assist the Deputy Interstate Compact Director by becoming familiar with all aspects of the ISC process with primary emphasis on 1) Transfer process of SD offender’s including completion of compact forms, securing transfer packet material, sending of transfer requests to receiving state, communicating reply to transfer requests to referring staff.  2) Transfer process of other state’s offender’s transferring to SD by reviewing transfer packets for completeness, forwarding request to appropriate Parole District for investigation, return SD reply to transfer to referring state.  3) Will work with active and closed cases.
4) Will forward travel permits to appropriate receiving state or SD Parole District. 5) Narrate all activity in PATS.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must be a full time student at a college or university. Preference will be given to those with junior standing or above by the end of the Spring 2008 semester, or who are currently enrolled at a vocational-technical school and have completed one year (nine months) by the start of the internship. Introduction to corrections, corrections process, criminal justice, community corrections, and college English I and II are preferred courses. Applicant must be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. Preference will be given to applicants who are pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice or Political Science. POSITION DESCRIPTION: This intern will be assigned to work in various STAR Academy programs. Position will allow intern to lead adjudicated juveniles through a strict program designed to provide a structured and healthy environment and enhance the physical, psychological, and educational well being of the participants while providing continual guidance regarding personal habits, hygiene, discipline, daily living skills, and acceptable personal behavior to ensure the attainment of positive and socially acceptable lifestyles by the juveniles.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be a full time student at a college or university. Preference will be given to those with junior standing or above by the end of the Spring 2008 semester, or who are currently enrolled at a vocational-technical school and have completed one year (nine months) by the start of the internship. Intern must have specific coursework in the following subjects to be considered: physical training, sociology, psychology, social work, criminal justice, or another human service related field. Must have the ability to communicate information clearly and concisely, interact with adjudicated juveniles and with others in order to establish and maintain effective professional working relationships; maintain composure under stressful conditions and maintain impartiality in dealing with juveniles. Successful applicant must undergo a background investigation. An arrest/conviction record will not necessarily bar employment. A pre-employment drug test will be required. POSITION DESCRIPTION: Intern will work providing security and supervision of inmates at recreation on a full time basis at the Mike Durfee State Prison. Duties will include supervising and directing medium security inmates incarcerated in the Prison. This entails monitoring inmates during meals, recreation, ethnic and cultural activities, and at special activities. The intern will escort inmates to appointments and activities inside the prison and outside the prison. The intern will enforce rules, policies, and will carry out a wide variety of security procedures to maintain the good security of the facility.

QUALIFICATIONS:

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The intern will work under the direction of the Superintendent, the Operations Manager, the Administration Secretary, and the Accounting Assistant as directed. It will involve a multitude of tasks, and will require extensive computer software knowledge to prepare spreadsheets, data bases, Internet searches and correspondence. The position does not work directly in the juvenile programs, but assists in the logistical support of the programs through the STAR Administration.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must be a full time student at a college or university. Preference will be given to those with junior standing or above by the end of the Spring 2008 semester, or who are currently enrolled at a vocational-technical school and have completed one year (nine months) by the start of the internship. POSITION DESCRIPTION: Intern will assist the nursing staff at the Mike Durfee State Prison with miscellaneous nursing functions assessing the medical needs of the male inmate population. Duties include: observing patients for reactions to treatments or any unusual conditions as care is delivered, reporting adverse conditions to licensed nurse or RN, administering oral medication, entering data into the computer and processing a variety of forms and paperwork, and assisting with the implementation of patient plan of care.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be a full time student at a college or university and have sophomore standing or above by the end of the Spring 2008 semester, or must currently  be enrolled at a vocational-technical school and have completed one year (nine months) by the start of the internship. Intern must be enrolled in an LPN or RN program, and must be willing to complete a med aid course. Intern will be required to work a variety of shifts.

Intern will create maps in ArcGIS and WILMA from existing data, as needed by Regional Habitat Manager and Resource Biologists. Intern will assist Resource Biologists with various habitat projects, such as native grass seeding and preparation, vegetation sampling, prescribed burning and preparation, etc. in Region 4, as needed.

Preference will be given to those with junior standing or above by the end of the Spring 2008 semester, or who are currently enrolled at a vocational-technical school and have completed one year (nine months) by the start of the internship. Must have completed coursework in rehabilitation counseling, psychology, special education, or a related course. The ideal candidate for this position would be interested in working with people with disabilities.
